Radial Shockwave Therapy (RSWT)

Radial Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive and highly effective treatment option for many different conditions. RSWT uses high pressured, acoustic shockwaves to penetrate the skin and interact with the injured tissue. There is no electrical stimulation involved.

How it works

The current understanding is that shockwave therapy affects injured tissue in multiple
different ways. Research suggests that it improves blood flow to the area, stimulates collagen production, decreases calcification around tendons, relaxes trigger points and interrupts pain signals by reducing the level of substance P present.

Usually, patients will require 5 sessions of shockwave therapy scheduled a week apart from each other to gain the full benefits. Patients commonly feel an immediate improvement in pain after the initial session that will last up to 12 hours. After successive treatments this period of relief increases and may become longstanding.

Each shockwave therapy session takes approximately 5-15 minutes depending on the body area. There may be mild discomfort during the treatment as applying shockwave over painful tissue is integral to its success.

Conditions Treated With RSWT

The primary conditions that are treated with radial shockwave therapy include:

  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)
  • Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)
  • Lateral Hip Pain
  • Rotator Cuff
  • Tendinopathy
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Adductor tendinopathy
  • Hamstring tendinopathy
  • Other tendon, muscle, ligament and chronic injuries
